Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day + 11, Further progress

Here's a report on my progress.
  • My platlets are finally bouncing back, completing the reboot of my immune system. A transfusion was not necessary at the hospital today.
  • I am nearly myself now, with the ability to concentrate on watching TV programs and performing tasks close to before the transplant.
  • I continue to have issues retaining fluid. I'm now up to 16 pounds. That's about 16 pounds of fluid in my lower extremeties. It is now causing issues walking up stairs, and I no longer can put my pants or socks on without assistance. The doctor decided to go easy with me by not giving me additional fluids today.
  • I am still with low blood pressure due to the procedure. Today, I was started on blood-pressure medication to help get it up to speed. Only once they are comfortable with my blood pressure will they work on reducing the fluid in my body.
With luck, I may start to get the rest of these issues resolved tomorrow -- with a day off on Thursday! Fingers crossed.

Edit (8/21/2006): Up to 16 pounds? Hah! My real weight was actually around 128 or so, so it was really more like 34 pounds of fluid.
