Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day +14, Attacking the Edema

It's hard to believe that two weeks ago I got the gift of my stem cells back. Now, fourteen days later, my immune system has started to build again and that the cell counts in my body are nearly normal.

I came into the hospital this morning weighing 4 pounds heavier than on Wednesday. The doctors decided that they would try to do something.

I was given some intravenous Lasix, which was successful in removing 1 1/2 pounds of fluid. Not what I was looking for, but a good start.

Tonight, I've swelled it all back, but at least I'm happy that they will continue to actively work on it. The extra fluid tires me out by the afternoon, so removing some of it will improve my condition and allow me to heal.

Anthony, God bless those stem cells. So glad to hear how well all is going. Try not to let the edema get to you, I'm sure the doctors will do all they can to get you back to normal, it will just take some time. Be patient and keep that positive attitude and that "great" sense of humor. You are definately "one of a kind".
With love,
Aunt Andrea
