Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day + 18, Stabilization

Today was a full day in the clinic, from 9:30 am - 5pm. Believe it or not, you do get used to the waiting for doctors and tests. There's also other patients we have befriended that we visit to pass the time.

Blood pressure was low, but they went ahead and gave me intravenous Lasix anyway. Taking a dose of Lasix goes something like this.
  • Hmmm, I feel nothing.
  • Hmmm, I feel nothing.
  • (gurgle gurgle) BOY I HAVE TO PEE!
I went over a liter in an hour, taking about 3 pounds off of me. Just by removing those pounds, I was able to go from a limp to a full stride walk. It feels great, even it will only last for the night.

Tomorrow I'm going in to do it again.

My labs are looking good. Blood counts are nearly normal, my platlet levels are off the chart, and my creatinine levels in my kidneys inched up a little closer to normal. This is optimistic as usually it takes about 3 months for everything to normalize.

I'm healing, although I must admit it is a slow process. I feel better everyday, although in very very slow increments.
