Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Back In The Day(s)

For those who just tuned in, let me recap the "Day + XXX" notation you see on my blog every day. When undergoing a stem-cell transplant, the day that you receive your stem cells is affectionately called your "birthday", or "Day + 0". This procedure is so important, you begin to mark time from the date this happens. For example, I am currently on Day + 160.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Lance Carter, an amyloidosis patient from New Jersey. He had his stem cell transplant this week, and today he is on Day+2. Happy "Birthday", Lance!

Meanwhile, our friend Beth has been progressing nicely in New York. She is currently on Day+50, and her body is starting to stabilize from the effects of the chemo and with the new lifestyle she must lead for the next few months.

I would elaborate at the trials and tribulations that I encountered when I was at Day+2, but to be honest I really don't remember. From what I've heard, it was probably better that way. I don't know what was worse -- the treatment, or the drugs that they had me on. I still have nightmares about the Decadron that I was on.

Needless to say, your body heals, and things do get better as time passes -- albeit very, very slowly. You really have to have the patience of Jove. It's hard to explain because I've never had to wait for something for such a long period of time. Well, maybe with the exception of trying to get through to the customer service department of my cell phone company. Now, that takes forever.
