Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day + 150, Five Months

Moving right along. We are at T+5 months and counting. Unlike the previous months, November really didn't feel like a "growth month" for me. There may be a little more stride in my step, and I've advanced my devious methods for keeping the cursed kidney leakage under control, but I don't notice much of a difference in my lifestyle. Of course, griping about little things may be a sign that the major ones are no longer in the spotlight.

It was a cold, dark and snowy weekend. It started off on a sour note when I got a call from Deb, one of the women who was undergoing treatment at the same time as I. She called to tell me that after going for her three-month evaluation last week, that the doctor called her on Friday to give the news that her first chemo + stem cell transplant was not successful. It was bewildering to hear this, since she recovered quite quickly from the chemo and is currently feeling very well.

This had me down for the rest of the weekend.

There was some welcome news on Sunday however, when I checked our team stats to discover that everybody on the team had finished work units, vaulting Team Tony into the top 5000 teams way ahead of schedule. We're on an express train to #1, baby.

Every work unit we produce helps scientists understand the mysteries of protein folding diseases. It's nice to actively be able to make a difference in this research. If you haven't joined us yet, here's your chance! The feelings you'll get from helping out is like a stepping into a warm cozy hottub. So join us! I promise I won't splash you this time.
