Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day + 157, Team Tony Targets Top Three Thousand

I'll be honest: it's been very hard to write posts on a daily basis. Now that things have stabilized during the last month or two, my body isn't undergoing the radical changes that plagued me during the first few months of treatment. It's been a slow, slow recovery with no complications -- so far.

Talking about complications, I have been worried about my edema over the last week. I've been gaining weight despite increases in my water pill medication. I'm not totally sure that is actual weight, or additional fluid. It's probably just a result of sodium from eating way too much salsa and chips, but it's still put me in worry mode. I do not want the amyloid attacking my kidneys again -- it's pretty damaged already as it is. Nothing you can do but wait and see.

This afternoon, while checking our team statistics page, it appears that we have now broke into the top four thousand Folding@Home teams. Twenty machines have produced 183 work units.

While we are currently blazing through the ranks like a shooting star, there's always room for people who want to make contributions to science while they are sleeping every night. If you haven't read my post about the Folding@Home software and our 'Amyloidosis Awareness' team, here's the link. By contributing to our team, you will help raise awareness for this deadly disease.

Tony,
I feel your pain on posting daily. I'm only on day +47 and I feel like I've run out of things to talk about that relate to amyloid and my recovery. I've been so impressed with your ability to keep this blog going strong during the "waiting period". That's a great service to the amyloid community. You always have quality posts...don't sweat it if they're not daily :)
