Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Day + 171, Holiday Wrap-up

They say all good things eventually come to an end, and my holiday vacation has proved to not be an exception. I must admit -- laying around and doing nothing but eat and sleep does have positive mental benefits. I strongly recommend it.

Oh, yes.... the results of my holiday diet. For the last few days, I've been surrounded by loads of snacks, sodas and appetizers. Most of it found it's way inside me, and let's just say it wasn't through osmosis (burp!) I just went with my regular appetite... then kicked up a notch! Final tally: I came back to Boston about 4 pounds heavier that when I left. I don't think any of that is fluid, so that's pure weight, baby.

I go to BUMC tomorrow morning to see my nephrologist. This is my last appointment with her until my six month evaluation on Jan. 23rd. I was hoping to give her some good news, but unfortunately, there hasn't been any change (good or bad) since my last visit in November. Although I've been able to manage it better, I'm still carrying around 5-6 pounds of fluid in my legs on a daily basis. The doctors say that they don't know if my kidneys will ever recover, so I'm slowly learning how to deal with it. If that's the worst to come out of all this, I'll gladly take it. Others have not been so lucky.
