Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Work

Traditionally, there have been hiatuses on my postings due to the fact that there hasn't been anything significant to report. Indeed, with the promising news I received late last month, there really isn't much I can do but continue to manage my trigylcerides and the edema. However, the last few days have been crazy with work, and along with managing the tail end of a bad cold, there's been no time to post.

The cold and dry air has done nothing for my recovery, and although my sore throat is nearly gone, my throat and chest are a little raw. Whatever I caught, it's still in me and sapping me of energy.

Here's a short list of upcoming doctor events for the next few months:
  • Feb 23: Visit with the cardiologist to see how low my trigylcerides are, and to make adjustments to my medicine (and diet) as necessary. I'd imagine that they will still be high, but nowheres near my previous levels. I'd guess that they'd be at 500 or so... a good cut from my score of 988 in late December.
  • Mar 14: Follow-up visit with my nephrologist to give a status on my edema. I'm hoping that by then, I will actually have news to report, as I really haven't had any improvements in the last 4 months or so. Any progress that I have had with the edema has been through better management, and of course a low-sodium diet. I'm no longer laying down during the day, so it gets to the legs quicker than it used to. To combat this, I've started taking the water pills in the morning, which seems to be more effective at getting rid of fluid.
  • Late March: I'll probably have yet another cardiologist appointment at this time to see if my trigylceride levels are within normal range.
  • Late June: My one-year evaluation. Another bone-marrow biopsy and a pair of crossed fingers to see if I am still in remission.
