Walking The Thin Man

In May 2005, I learned that I had developed amyloidosis, a rare protein folding disease. This is my story.

Long-Term Disability Appeal

Back in December, I was told that my disability insurance company would not pay me any benefits for my long-term disability. In January, I got the official notice, claiming that my amyloidosis was a pre-existing condition (that is, I had the condition prior to being covered.) Although I wasn't diagnosed with the disease until after I was covered, they claimed that doctor's appointments prior to my coverage were related to the disease, and thus it wasn't covered.

Seeing that these benefits could have amounted to a lot of money (several thousands of dollars, if you really want to know), I decided to appeal the ruling. In January I got the official notice, and in February, I filed a formal appeal, arguing that since I wasn't diagnosed when I started coverage, it couldn't possibly be linked as a pre-existing condition. I also claimed that I was claiming disablity due to the treatment and not the disease.

Last week, I got an offical notice from the company that they were upholding the ruling. Everything that I've done since I was diagnosed -- the doctor's appointments, the evaluations, the treatment -- all stem from the amyloidosis, and since I went to the doctors prior to the coverage date with complaints similiar to side-effects of the disease, it is a pre-existing condition, and thus nothing would be covered.

So, that's that. I have no other further avenues to appeal, so I guess that is the end of it.
